Akersville is a Monroe county community about 13 miles southwest of Tompkinsville. The name probably comes from the name of a local merchant. The community is also known as Highoaks or Highoakie.

A Slowgo post office opened in 1882, was renamed Akersville in 1885, and closed in 1956.
