Altamont, Kentucky
Altamont is a Laurel county community about six miles north of London. It was established by the Altamont Coal Company in 1882 and the Altamont mine was at one time the largest in the county. A Nield post office opened in 1884, was renamed Altamont in 1885, and closed in 1918. The name Nield is a misspelling of Charles Neild, one of the principals of the Altamont Coal Company.
