Carcassonne, Kentucky
Carcassonne, Kentucky

Carcassonne is a Letcher county community about seven miles northwest of Whitesburg on Bull Creek. The locale was known as Gander, possibly for locally abundant geese, by the early twentieth century. In 1923 Hendrix Caudill founded a school and named it Carcassonne after the walled town in France. The school included several classroom buildings, a gymnasium, and dormitories for girls and boys. The high school closed in 1946 and the elementary school in 1974. One of the school buildings is now the Carcassonne Community Center and hosts a monthly square dance. The Gander post office opened in 1907 and was renamed Carcassonne in 1937. It has since closed.
