Cawood is a Harlan county community on Martins Fork of the Cumberland River at the mouth of Crummies Creek about 10 miles southeast of Harlan. The name comes from a local family. Cato Station on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad was in Cawood.

The Cawood post office opened in 1896.

The population of the Cawood census designated place was 731 in 2010.
