Coalton, Kentucky
Coalton is a Boyd county community about 12 miles west of Catlettsburg on Williams Creek. Coal mining began in the area in the mid-nineteenth century. The new Lexington and Big Sandy Railroad arrived circa 1868. A Metcalfe Furnace post office opened in the vicinity in 1848, was renamed Star Furnace in 1850, and finally changed to Coalton in 1865. It closed in 1928.
