Flippin is in Monroe county at the forks of Indian Creek about 12 miles west of Tompkinsville. Settlement began circa 1790 and the name comes from a pioneer family. It may have also been known as Johnsonville or Johnstonsville for another family. Just north of the eventual site of Flippin was an early settlement known as Pikeville.

Flippin was incorporated in 1846, but was later dissolved.

The Flippin post office opened in 1858 and closed in 1964. The Pikeville post office opened in 1828 and closed in 1833.
