Gest, Kentucky
Gest is a Henry county community near the mouth of Cedar Creek on the Kentucky River about 21 miles east of New Castle. It was established as Gistville before 1862 and probably named for the local Gist family in hopes of creating a river port because of the lock. The town was also known as Gest or Gestville. (The post office shortened the name to Gest.) The railroads bypassed the town and there was never much development. The population probably peaked in the late nineteenth century at around 200.
Gistville was incorporated in 1862 and was later dissolved.
The Gest post office opened in 1882 and closed in 1959.
The Kentucky River Lock and Dam 3 at Gest were completed in 1842. The downstream lock 2 is at Lockport and the upstream lock 4 is at Frankfort. Lock and Dam 3 are maintained by the Kentucky River Authority.
