Heidelberg, Kentucky
Heidelberg is a Lee county community on the Kentucky River about three miles west of Beattyville. The site was settled by a German family circa 1799 and named for the German city. It eventually had sawmills and the railroad arrived in 1902.
Heidelberg was apparently never incorporated.
The Heidelberg post office opened in 1904.
Heidelberg is the site of Kentucky River Lock and Dam 14, which went into service in 1917. They were the last constructed and the farthest from the mouth of the Kentucky. Additional locks and dams were proposed, but none were built. Lock 14 was sealed in 1999. The downstream lock 13 is near Willow. Lock and Dam 14 are maintained by the Kentucky River Authority.
