Smiths Grove is a Warren county city about 15 miles northeast of Bowling Green. It was settled early in the nineteenth century and the name comes from the owners of the land. The railroad arrived circa 1859 and spurred development.

Smiths Grove was incorporated in 1871.

A Smiths Grove post office opened in 1829 and closed in 1834. A Cool Spring post office opened in 1836 and was renamed Smiths Grove in 1844.

The population in 2020 was 747.
