Carlisle county is in the Jackson Purchase region of Kentucky. The elevation in the county ranges from 283 to 550 feet above sea level.
It was formed in 1886 from Ballard county. The county seat is Bardwell.
In 2020 the county population was 4,826 in a land area of 189.43 square miles, an average of 25.5 people per square mile.
The equine population was 300 in the 2012 Kentucky Equine Survey.
Carlisle county is in the Purchase Area Development District.
Carlisle county was named to honor John G. Carlisle, who served as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives and Secretary of the Treasury.
