Hickman county is in the Jackson Purchase region of Kentucky. The elevation in the county ranges from 276 to 510 feet above sea level.
It was formed in 1822 from Caldwell and Livingston counties. Hickman county was a source of Ballard (1842) and Fulton (1845) counties. The county seat is Clinton.
In 2020 the county population was 4,521 in a land area of 242.27 square miles, an average of 18.7 people per square mile.
It is the least densely populated county in the state.
The equine population was not available in the 2012 Kentucky Equine Survey.
Hickman county is in the Purchase Area Development District.
Hickman county was named to honor Captain Paschal Hickman, who was killed in the War of 1812 at the River Raisin.
