Avawam is a Perry county community the Right Fork of Big Creek about five miles southwest of Hazard. The name was apparently coined by the first postmaster, Alfred Couch.

The Avawam post office opened in 1892 and moved several times in the vicinity, including across the boundary into Leslie county.
