Cherokee State Park, Kentucky
Cherokee State Park was in Marshall county on Kentucky Lake about 16 miles southeast of Benton. It was the only Kentucky state park open to African-Americans. It was created in 1951 and included 300 acres just north of the old Kentucky Lake State Park with a beach, rental cottages, a kitchen and dining hall, and a picnic area. In 1963 Cherokee State Park became part of what is now known as Kenlake State Resort Park after Governor Combs ordered the end of segregation in public facilities.
