Drift, Kentucky
Drift, Kentucky

Drift is a Floyd county community along the Left Fork of Beaver Creek about 20 miles south of Prestonsburg. Settlement might have begun decades before coal mining arrived. It may have been named for the kind of coal mine in use there, but that isn't certain and there are other stories. At the height of mining in the 1940s the population was about 3,500.

The Drift post office opened in 1909.
