Perkins is in Madison county on Tates Creek about eleven miles northwest of Richmond. The name apparently comes from a local family. Other names proposed for the post office were Beech Spring and Perkinsvile. The post office was also to serve nearby Stringtown.

The Perkins post office operated from 1880 to 1898.
