Sonora is a southeastern Hardin county town about 10 miles south of Elizabethtown. It was established in the middle of the nineteenth century during construction of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. The name may come from the Mexican home of a railroad worker. Sonora was incorporated in 1885. The Sonora post office opened in 1859. The population in 2010 was 513.

A Buck Snort or Bucksnort post office operated in the same area in 1858 and 1859.
