Elliott county is in the Eastern Coal Field region of Kentucky. The elevation in the county ranges from 645 to 1340 feet above sea level.
It was formed in 1869 from Carter, Lawrence, and Morgan counties. Elliott county was a source of Beckham (1904) county. The county seat is Sandy Hook.
In 2020 the county population was 7,354 in a land area of 234.32 square miles, an average of 31.4 people per square mile.
The equine population was 600 in the 2012 Kentucky Equine Survey.
Elliott county is in the Fivco Area Development District. It is in the Appalachian region according to the Appalachian Regional Commission.
Elliott county was named to honor either John Lisle Elliott, an early settler and state legislator, or his son John Milton Elliott.
