Metcalfe county is in the Pennyrile region of Kentucky. The elevation in the county ranges from 560 to 1120 feet above sea level.

It was formed in 1860 from Adair, Barren, Cumberland, Green, and Monroe counties. The county seat is Edmonton.

In 2020 the county population was 10,286 in a land area of 289.65 square miles, an average of 35.5 people per square mile.

The equine population was 1,600 in the 2012 Kentucky Equine Survey.

Metcalfe county is in the Glasgow micro statistical area and the Barren River Area Development District. It is in the Appalachian region according to the Appalachian Regional Commission.

Metcalfe county was named to honor Thomas Metcalfe, United States Senator and tenth governor of Kentucky.
